On July 8, 1853, Commodore Matthew Perry of the United States Navy sailed into Tokyo and on behalf of the U.S. government, forced Japan to enter into trade with the United States and demanded a treaty permitting unequal trade conditions, along with the opening of Japanese ports to U.S. merchant ships.

With the election of President Trump and the increasing tension in Eastern Asia, Kumiko reflects again on the arrival of Commodore Perry IN 1853 and ponders what kind of future awaits the United States of America and Japan.
