Angie Contini

Opens 4 September
Runs 5 – 15 September 2019

Angie Contini is an emerging experimental multimedia artist and scholar living in Sydney, graduating from the University of Sydney with a double BA Hons in music and film studies (2013), and a Doctor of Philosophy in existential aesthetics (2018).

A Study of Souls presents an audio-visual collage of spirit photography, surrealist “moving portraiture” film and impressionist soundscape to contemplate the bond between the human spirit and those elements of nature traditionally understood as mystical, alchemic and enlightening. Through bespoke, organic methods of photographic capture, the boundaries of the human form become ephemeral, luminescent and porous, as they dissolve into the elements of light, water, vapour, earth, fire and dust. Poising on the threshold of the human and the cosmos, these experimental, sensual works gesture to the ancient belief in an ensouled, transformational world, to reimagine the ways in which we embody the spirit of nature.

A Study of Souls is Angie’s second solo exhibition following A Use for Beauty at The Shop Gallery, Glebe, in May 2019.

The Opening event for A Study of Souls features an excerpt from a new theatre work by Stephanie Di Giacomo, NINETEEN, TWENTY-NINE.
